Our Mission

We believe that everyone in Scotland should have a valid will, regardless of their financial situation. Far too many people put off writing a will because they think it will be too expensive or too complicated.

When someone dies without a will in Scotland, the rules of intestacy take over. These rules are rigid and often lead to outcomes the deceased person never would have wanted. Spouses can find themselves sharing the estate with distant relatives, and unmarried partners might receive nothing at all.

We built Free Scottish Wills to solve this problem. By providing a straightforward, online tool tailored specifically to Scots law, we make it easy for people to take control of their affairs without paying a penny.

Why is it free?

Our service is completely free to use. You can create an account, fill out the questionnaire, and download your legally valid will as a PDF without ever entering payment details.

We keep the lights on through occasional, clearly marked partnerships and referrals. For example, if your situation is too complex for our simple will template (perhaps you own a business or property abroad), we will suggest you speak to a qualified Scottish solicitor. If you choose to use one of our recommended solicitors, we may receive a small referral fee from them. You are under no obligation to use them.

Who are we?

Free Scottish Wills is operated by Leonico Ltd, a company registered in Scotland. We are a technology company, not a law firm. We do not provide legal advice.

We worked with Scottish legal professionals to design the templates and logic that power our system, ensuring that the documents produced comply with the Requirements of Writing (Scotland) Act 1995 and the Succession (Scotland) Act 1964.

When should you use a solicitor instead?

Our service is designed for straightforward estates. It is perfect if you want to leave everything to your spouse and children, or divide your money among a few friends and charities.

However, you should seek professional legal advice if:

  • You own a business or agricultural property.
  • You own property outside the UK.
  • You want to set up a complex trust (for example, to protect assets from care home fees or provide for a disabled relative).
  • You are worried someone might challenge your will.
  • Your estate is large enough to incur significant Inheritance Tax.

If you fall into any of these categories, we strongly recommend speaking to a solicitor.
